We have become a couple who rarely goes out. That is, without the kids.
We moved six months ago, and I have yet to cross off "Find Babysitter" from my to-do list.
Actually, I think there is a babysitter living right next door, but I just haven't picked up the phone to call her. Yet.
[This is reminding me that I keep meaning to write a post on my problems with procrastination. Later, though. Maybe tomorrow.]
So other than Children's Museums, grilled-cheese-serving restaurants and neighborhood parties, we really don't get out. Together, anyway.
Instead we find ourselves putting the kids to bed early on weekend nights, pouring our favorite cocktail and popping in a movie rental. By the time Saturday night rolls around we want nothing more than to sit mindlessly in front of the tv while sipping martinis. Or gin and tonics. Or wine. Or beer. Or scotch. Well, you get the idea.
Which brings me to last Saturday night.
We uncorked a bottle of wine, wrapped ourselves in fleece and pushed 'play' on the dvd player.
I am usually the one to choose the movie because, well, I just am. We have one of those online movie rental memberships so since my laptop has morphed into an extra appendage, and is, therefore, always within spitting distance, it's easier for me to update our online queue. Usually I pick real winners like Failure To Launch (although I do love me some Matthew McConaughey) or The Holiday.
Anyway, we sunk a little deeper into the couch awaiting our movie-induced-coma to begin.
The previews were, oddly, movies we had never heard of and, this is even stranger, none of the previews were in ENGLISH.
Weird, no?
We kept watching. The opening scene showed a stark, unfamiliar official government building. Someone spoke, but we couldn't quite make out what they had said.
Brian and I looked at each other, each raising an eyebrow.
"What's the name of this movie again?" Brian asked.
"The Lives of Others," I said, reading the dvd sleeve.
I kept reading, and noticed something I hadn't noticed before.
"Um, when is says foreign does that generally mean it is in another language? Like, say, not English?" I asked.
Brian shook his head, no doubt wondering why he married a blond.
We've seen some great foreign films before, and we can be all intellectual-artsy-fartsy with the best of them (no, really, we can. I swear), but on this weary weekend night neither of us was in the mood to read subtitles for the next two hours.
Besides, all that reading would interfere with our alcohol intake.
Never ones to give up in the face of a challenge, we continued reading watching the movie. It wasn't long before we were both so engrossed in the story, so busy reading those little subtitles while simultaneously paying attention to, you know, the actors that we forgot (!) about our wine, which is usually the whole point of Saturday movie night.
It's one of those films that I am finding myself still thinking about days later while engaging in some mundane task like folding the laundry. Or doing the dishes. Or changing a diaper. Or making dinner. Or sweeping the floor. Well, you get the idea.
And, I assure you, if I can sit through two hours and 20 minutes of subtitles on a Saturday night (and like it) anybody can.
Go watch it and tell me what you think.

I loved that movie (or do you have to call it a "film" when it's not in English?). Particularly the way the bookstore scene summed it up: "It's for me." It was like an opera, I thought.
Cool! Thanks. I'm always up for a good movie. I'm definitely going to see it.
I love staying in and watching a movie with a bottle of wine, too. That's my idea of a good time, these days.
(And, by the way - yes, you are blonde. A dumb one? Quite the contrary!)
Thanks for the recommendation. We're the same way. So that night in sounds so familiar (and nice). Sad. True.
Out Netflix queue is stacked! I'll have to add this one. I felt the same way about the Movie Once - it's still stuck in my head 2 weeks later.
Ooh! Always looking for a good movie recommendation, thanks.
The last movie hubs and I watched together was "Beerfest". We have very intellectual pursuits.
Your life sounds exactly like ours. (And we just saw Failure to Launch too, hee hee!)
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll add it to our queue.
(Feels good to finally get a chance to be back here!)
We do date night on Saturday nights as well. Our last rental was Superbad (the name, not a review). We've very highbrow here.
You're right; by Saturday nights, we're practically drooling so the simpler, the better.
I love subtitled movies, I guess I'm weird! My husband refuses to watch them since they'd get in the way of his beer drinking. Too bad we don't live next door to each other, I think we'd get along!
I am going to have to put this on my queue at Netflix. Thanks for the tip....
BTW, I loves me some Mathew McConnaghy (i know that is spelled wrong, sorry!), too!
ummm oops! If that were us my husband would never let me live that down! I like staying in to watch, as opposed to going out. I must be showing my age.
Huh...I gotta check it out. And how timely that you talked about needing a babysitter. I have just the gal for you. Go check out my post today if you get a second *big grin*
How do you manage to get to be the one who picks out the movie? I wish I had that job. I'm tired of seeing all the blow 'um up movies.
I LOVED that movie. I have to say,the whole "foreign film" concept gets a bad rap. So many are WAY better than most American films because they are much more "out of the box" and seem fresh and new and different from the standard American plots.
Yeah, that just about describes our night life as well! We loved The Life Of Others - we actually saw it at the Miami Film Festival last year.
I will put it in the queue.
We can go out on a Saturday night, but Friday night? That's our early to bed night (and by that I mean early to sleep!).
This is a tough movie, nothing spoon feed, slow moving, no Hollywood ending, having said that, I can say that I thought it brilliant and very literary and, of course, worthy of a few days of digestion.
It's not sunshine and moonbeams but it's worthwhile.
Sounds frighteningly like our weekends - we usually pick something which can be laughed and cried at!
An age ago I watched the most lovely french film - subtitled - Romeo et Juilette - a businessman and his cleaner who fall in love...worth reading the subtitles for!
Thanks for the recommendation. I'm always looking for new movies that don't involve large Hasbro toys.
I found you through Playgroups and I'm enjoying your posts.
Always looking for a good film....
your night in is the same as us!!!
thanks for the movie suggestion! We rarely get out either anymore. Actually had friend offer to watch baby but when night rolled around we were too tired to actually go out and sat on couch with movie and takeout pizza instead. Have to say it was such a pleasure!
The thing about foreign films is that they better be REALLY GOOD in order for me to sit through them. Then it's like reading a good book. I mean, only "Heroes" can get away with a couple of guys speaking only Japanese, right?
I saw that movie awhile ago and LOVED it! Looks like your ability to pick a winner is improving.

I absolutely loved that movie. It deserved every bit of praise it received.
