A piece of advice: get your wisdom teeth removed when you are young.
You know, when you are 20 and your dentist says something like, "hey, you should probably get those impacted wisdom teeth out now while your young enough to recover quickly and before they really start to hurt because by then you'll probably be a lot closer to 40 with kids and you won't have the luxury of lounging around for a few days to recover. Oh? And also? The older you get the closer the tooth roots will grow to major nerves, so if you wait? You'll have a much greater chance of permanent nerve damage. Walking around with drool dribbling down your chin at middle age won't be pretty".
Listen to your dentist.
I had my second impacted wisdom tooth removed this morning.
Because I am a wimp, I opted to be completely knocked out for the 30 minute procedure.
The last thing I remember is the surgeon saying something like, "It will take about 10 to 15 seconds before you start to feel a little dizz...".
And then I woke up with a bloody piece of gauze hanging out of my mouth.
And then I threw up.
And then I threw up again on the way out to the car.
And for the past 6 hours I've been alternating between groggy sleep and peach sorbet cocktails laced with advil (thank you, Brian).
The good news is I have one less wisdom tooth to complain about (this is good news for those who live with me as well).
The bad news is I have one more wisdom tooth which is not only erupting sideways, but is hidden under a major nerve and my jaw bone. Removal of this little gem, I am told, will result in a mandatory 5 day recovery period and possible permanent nerve damage to my lower lip.
Yeah, drooling at this stage in my life will not be attractive. I might as well wait until I'm 90 because by then the drooling won't be so shocking.
So I'm gonna' do what I usually do in these situations. I'm going to forget about it and hope it goes away.
In the event that it does start to hurt sooner rather than later, I ask the internets to provide some encouraging words on wisdom tooth removal and how it didn't turn you or someone you know into a drooling, dribbling mess?
Hey, not a bad post for someone still a little loopy from lingering effects of anaesthetics.

I wish I hadn't read this! I've been putting off getting 2 removed for several years. Hope you're feeling better!!
Hope you feel better soon.
I am in the same boat as Sugar Kane - I have been told every visit for the last 4 years I should get all 4 out...I have another regular dentist appointment next month...wonder what they will say.
Gargle with salt water! Helped my hubby! He got his 4 out 2 months after we met and three days before we drove 9 hours to go to my grandmother's funeral where he met everyone for the first time!!!!
Oh man, I had all four of mine done a few years ago...ouch! Feel better soon!
I'm sure glad I listened to my husband then!
oh, no! this sounds awful. i'm so sorry.
Ouch - feeling a twinge just reading this!
I had mine out at the behest of my parents in college. THANK GOD I chose to listen to them. I hope the next removal goes smoothly for you and no nerve damage!!!
Oooh. Feel better! I unfortunately did not heed anyone's advice at the age of 20 and thus at the age of 34 have all FOUR wisdom teeth impacted, coming in at odd angles and needing extraction.
Fun!
Ouch.
I am so glad I had all four removed at 16....
I'm impressed that you can even sit and post today.
I only had 2 to remove, and I did it in my early 20's. It's worth noting that I only did it then because my dental coverage was ending. I, too, was a wimp and was put under. If it is offered, why not???
Oh man. I have all of my wisdom teeth still and I vaguely remember the dentist saying something like this to me when I was around 19.
I know your pain. I just recently went through getting a cap put on a tooth that shattered in half... blogged about it... enjoy!

I too have been warned that the removal of mine may result in the loss of ability to hold my lower lip up. I am not a fan of this idea. So far no one has made drooling floppy lower lips sexy. Maybe if Julia Roberts tried the look out first, I might have a chance....but I dare say I will not be a trend setter making drooling lower lips the new black.
I really enjoyed the pain pills!
Poor thingie! Glad you're better, though.
I'm thinking of you.
Er. . .I hope you recover quickly and that they're wrong about the other tooth. 'Cause I have no advice. I don't have any wisdom teeth.
*ducks*
I have two left. One came in sorta straight and got pulled. One came in and crumbled my molar, so they pulled the molar and replaced it with the wisdom tooth. I'm pretty sure another tooth will get that outcome (If it comes in straight enough, that is...otherwise I think I'll be toothless back there. But now, that last one. I think that's going to be a real stinker.
I'm sure you're feeling better by now, but sorry you had to go through it.
Ughh, I need to have mine removed. All four have come through, but still need to be removed. I am so not looking forward to it. Maybe I'll wait until the youngest starts kindergarten and then do it the beginning of the week, so I'll have five full almost kid free days to recover.
Sounds like it could be a plan...
